The Bundesliga has been a provider for talent for the Premier League in the past, going back to Jurgen Klinsmann at Tottenham, Michael Ballack at Chelsea, or Jens Lehmann at Arsenal. More recently players like Vincent Kompany, Joel Matip, Leroy Sane, or Granit Xhaka have taken their talents to the over to the Premier League. The following 5 players have flown more or less “under the radar” in Europe, but could all do a job for a Premier League team, at different price ranges.
1. Benjamin Hübner
First in line is Benjamin Hübner who came up with Ingolstadt in the 2014/15. He played a big part in their success in the Bundesliga last season and moved to Hoffenheim in the Summer. The german developed further under Julian Nagelsmann, with Hoffenheim qualifying for european football for the first time in their club’s history. He has contributed massively in the 3 at the back system, currently sitting in the Top 10 for Interceptions and Tackles. Although Hübner has struggled at times in possession, he could play a part in a Premier League defense as a no-nonsense defender.
Premier League Club: Lower Mid-Table (West Ham, Bournemouth, Stoke)
2. Willi Orban
At 24 years old the center-back is already the captain and leader of a young RB Leipzig team that rose from promotion to 2nd place in the Bundesliga and potential Champions League. He is still not a finished product, but shows great potential and under the right guidance could develop into a top 6 defender. He is already 2nd in Aerial Duels won this season and national team looks not to far away for the german, joining world-class defenders Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng.
Premier League: Potential Top 6 if he develops, upper mid-table (Everton, Southampton)
3. Timo Werner
Another Leipzig standout, the young German Striker has scored 17 goals in the Bundesliga and has added 5 Assists to his name. At just 21 years old Werner looks like the next great German Striker, in a line that includes Miroslav Klose, Jurgen Klinsmann and Gerd Müller. His pace let’s him fly past defenders and his already great technique let’s him go into the one-on-ones and win them more often than not. He will not be cheap, probably cost teams in the region of 50 Mio.€ like Leroy Sane, who obviously moved to Manchester City from Schalke last year.
Premier League: Definite Top 6, depending on need of striker(Arsenal, Liverpool)
4. Vincenzo Grifo
The german-born Italian has been with Freiburg since 2015/16 and achieved promotion with them. This year, he has been a main contributor to a team that is looking to qualify for the Europa League. Contributing to 13 goals, while being in the Top 10 in Assists and Key Passes. He could be a real addition to any team that does not want to spend outrageous money, because he has flown under the radar even in Germany.
Premier League: Mid-Table, (WBA, Watford, Crystal Palace)
5. Julian Brandt
The 20 year old has had a difficult season with Bayer Leverkusen finding themselves in 12th place, which is way below their expectation. Still the german international is on a good track and is looking for his next big move which could be to the Premier League. He still has 6 Assists in the Bundesliga this season in a team ravaged by injuries and the suspension of Hakan Calhanoglu. Together with Leroy Sane and Timo Werner the attacking future of the german national team looks bright and he could well be on his way to one of the big spanish clubs if no Premier League teams comes in for his services
Premier League: Any Top 6 Team
Stay tuned for Part 2 of the “under the radar” Bundesliga who you could enjoy watching next year in the English top flight!
